This is an ancient post with no relevance to modern systems.
Supposedly Ghostscript can do this, but I found it had more problems than I could put up with. The Xpdf program is available from Skunkware ( https://www.sco.com/skunkware) and works well.
You'll need to modify Preferences->Navigator->Applications and change the Portable Document Format application to:
xpdf -s -q %s
