cant open /dev/tty for writing

Hi

A strange problem. We were backing up to a 12gb dds3 tape fine for a while then it suddenly

stopped working with the error cant open /dev/tty for writing. this is the script

find / -depth -print | cpio -ocvB -O /dev/rStp1 and is run via cron. When i run this command manually the error i recieve is

reached end of medium on ouput.

This is a 12gb with compression on DDS3 tape drive and the full backup should not fill up the tape.

Can anybody help
