Podcasts

The links below seem to be dead. If I can find the originals, I'll try reposting them.

I said I wouldn't do this, but what the heck, we'll give it a try.

What changed my mind is that I've found that I can multitask with podcasts - I can listen to a recording while I'm reading or writing something else entirely.. as long as the podcast isn't too techy (because I'm not paying close attention, of course)

My Working for yourself E-Book will show you how to break free
from the 9 to 5 grind.

Sooo.. I don't know how much of this I'm going to do, maybe a little, maybe a lot. I'll keep it light and not too geekish, and who knows, maybe it's fun for all of us. And yes, I'll accept your podcasts too if you want me to publish them through this channel.

My first efforts are a little weak on the audio side, because I just used the built in mike on my iBook. I'll go buy a real microphone later this week and probably will re-record those.. there's a few dropouts. It's good enough for now, I think.. if not, let me know.

So what's next? Video? Gosh, I hope not..

  • Time to clean the shed - and the iBook (03:14)
  • What are PTR records and why you care (06:50)
  • Podcasting for small business (02:26)
  • How much money can you make with blog advertising? (06:56)
  • How the Nuns saved their data (07:08)
  • Why your site needs RSS now (03:43)

I have been thinking about doing a podcast myself. I am just trying to come up with a somewhat original topic. I have to admit - I am starting to get a little addicted to podcasts. I am starting to listen to them more than my music.

I also purchased the new video capable iPod. It is a real nice unit. I mostly use it for the HD ability, but I also really, really enjoy the TV show "Lost". I did not start watching Lost, until halfway into the first season, so I was able the see all the past episodes courtesy of iTunes. Apple is doing real well selling the TV shows, so hopefully they will add many more. I also like Alias, and the start time conflicts with my daughters bed time routine, so I am missing this seasons episodes. It would be great to be able to d/l those too. I really do not watch any more shows than that, but I would enjoy some Discovery channel shows, and also some PBS shows. iTunes is a gold mine waiting to be tapped. It won't be long until iPods get a satellite tuner, and we can pick up live feeds.

I really would like to hear Tony each week, speaking on a subject. Heck, I'd even spend a few bucks to hear his episodes :-)

No need to toss money my way - it's cheap enough to produce this stuff, and saves me wearing out my keyboard. I do need to go pick up a real mike.. maybe I'll check out the new Apple store opening in Burlington this Saturday and kill two birds with one stone..

Where is the store going to be located? Do you have a link?

Good to hear the man behind all the articles I read! Wasn't expecting the Boston accent, but it works...

Dumb question about RSS since I haven't used it much - do you folks use something other than the "RSS Bookmark" feature of firefox for RSS feeds of sites you like? Anything combine a bunch of RSS feeds into one page/bookmark? I ask because going to the RSS bookmark is sometimes a longer process than going to the page itself. Firefox quick searches means typing "ap" in the location bar for this site is less work than going to my nested bookmarks...

Anyway, thumbs up with the podcasts, I'll be listening regularly...

My family roots are very deep in Massachusetts. But our oldest daughter has been living in VA for 20 years ; she says we all talk funny now..

I tend toward separate RSS readers. Right now I'm using Thunderbird, but am not completely happy with it.

Certainly you can get to an often visited page with just a keystroke tap or two, but for the many, many sites where I mkight be interested in only one or two articles, RSS is faster - I scan the list, click on what I like, and then "Mark all as read" and move on.

So how can I get this easily into iTunes?

I added iTunes data to the podcast RSS feed
http://pcunix.audioblog.com/rss/aplawrence_podcasts.xml

I don't have an ipod to test with. I did mark these for syndication, so that probably means you can find them somewhere through Apple also though I haven't a clue how that works.

Great! For other iTunes users, to subscribe to this podcast, I simply clicked on Advanced, and chose subscribe to podcast, and pasted in the URL in Tony's previous post. Seems to work fine. I will let you know how it sounds on my ipod. I have been doing nothing but listening to different podcasts on my ipod in the car lately, trying to find the ones I really like.

I still haven't got around to buying a decent microphone - I don't like doing these over the telephone and being unable to edit them.. I guess I need to do that soon :-)
