Windows LMHOST file -->Re PPP, dialin andNetworks
- LMHOSTS.SAM, is a sample that shows all the mysteries of its proper configuration. Read the lmhosts.sam file carefully..spacing is critical. -

maxexecargs -->Re MAXEXECARGS on SCO Openserver5.0.6
- One common source of this is 'configure' scripts trying to determine how large an argument space is available. -

Why system rebooted -->Re Why is my systemrebooted?
- Software failure would be caught by the kernel, kernel failures would yield a kernel trap, often seen on NT as the blue screen of death. -

rlogin .rhosts rhosts user equivalency -->Re Telnet AutoLogin
- There's a bit more to user equivalence then you mentioned. If you fail to take into account the other aspects, your users aren't equivalent. Symptoms of this would be the "r" commands like rlogin, and rdist not working as you'd expect. -

how to use cpio list tape file mark no rewind -->
- First, you are using the "no rewind" device. You shouldn't be doing that unless you are making multiple backups to the same type. Ordinarily you would use "find . -print | cpio -ocvB -O /dev/rStp1" -

Mac OS X don't buy Virex!
- Like the person posting below, I too got burned by McAfee. Apparently there is a problem with Mac OS X 10.2 that causes a problem with their code. They have a fix for it, but amazingly, THEY WANT TO CHARGE YOU EXTRA TO GET THAT FIX! -

SCO_OSR5 anonymous ftp inetd.conf
- The ftpd line in /etc/inetd.conf must have the option -a appended. Even though the man page for ftpd says that -a is default behaviour, it is not true. -

tcp connections pseudo ttys NSTRPAGES -->Re No more than230 TCP connections.
- You need to run `netconfig`, click on "SCO TCP/IP" below your NIC (not the one below "Loopback driver"). Then go to [Protocol -> Modify protocol configuration] and raise the number of TCP connections. You can also raise the number of pseudo ttys here. These thing scost a bit of memory, but not terribly much. Try setting TCP connections to 1024, pseudo ttys to 512. -

pppoe verizon dsl -->Re ADSL with Unixware
- I pop the install CD in my laptop and go through the gyrations of getting the account registered as if my laptop were the only PC. -

CD can boot but not install
- Why can a SCO CD boot but still not be able to install? The point at which the install fails is _exactly_ where you would expect it to fail if the OS being installed didn't have a driver for the hardware. -

Unable to get jobs out of print queue
- I have a client that had 10 rlp based printers and it was an administration -

kernel rebuild error - space.c
- It is unfortunately easy to corrupt the tape files and be unable to relink a kernel. This one looks like the .h file is missing entirely. -

Set and retain ownership and permissions on tty files
- You'll need to disable the tty(s) from login before using chmod or chown. You also may want to modify /etc/conf/node.d/cn (SCO Unix). -

Network ftp speed
- To use the table, find the number 1 in the column of the unit you want to convert (eg, kybtes - "1" is 4th down) then multiply by the numbers in the SAME row that correspond to the target unit (column) you require. So to convert kbytes to bits, multiple by 8196. To convert megabytes to kbytes, multiply by 1024, etc. -

printer escape sequences hp -->Re Creating HP EscapeSequences
- Script to reset HP printer fonts. Each time a printer interface file closes (after every print job), it resets the printer to defaults. -

ctrl-alt-delete reboot -->Re Disableinghalt/reboot/poweroff
- Absolutely right. I can't really lock the computer case in a safe box (that would be the only near 100% perfect solution to the problem), but I'm applying all the basic security measures, like password protect the BIOS setup, allow only the harddisk to boot, remove the lilo prompt, disabling CTRL-ALT-DEL and the halt command... -

apm advanced power managent shutdown power off -->ReShutdown Help ME please!!!!!!!!!
- Make sure you have enabled Advanced Power Management with mkdev apm. Then, edit the file: /etc/conf/pack.d/uapm/space.c The file is self-documenting. Towards the end of the file, there is a data structure that lets you specify the power state to enter during various shutdown events. Change the line for a normal shutdown to power down the system. Relink the kernel and try a sync; haltsys from single-user mode for a quick test of the power-down feature. Not all motherboards support APM properly, and some systems may work with 5.0.5 but not 5.0.6. -

linux out of vm virtual memory -->Re VM Killing process....
- To survive this, the kernel goes into lifesaver mode and begins "reaping" processes somewhat randomly in order to free memory so that it won't crash. (I think the only process safe from reaping is probably init). 0 -

can't find tty in protected database -->Re Long Pause During Login
- Check the permissions on /etc/resolv.conf. It should be 644 and not 640. Telnetd insists on doing a reverse DNS lookup on literally every connection (including local) and requires a DNS server. You can speed things up if the DNS server goes down by putting bogus entries for each of your remote machines in /etc/hosts for each of your pseudo ttys. The host names don't need to be real or even sane. -

Early opinions of Linux vs. BSD
- If you want to go back to your "Golden Unix Years" [ or more likely the Xenix years ] I'd suggest the FreeBSD distribution. -

menus for shell scripts
- How to create better menus for shell scripts - you first need to decide how much effort you are going to put in to it. -

rename files script
- I have 77 images named 0.gif through 76.gif, but I need them to be named 1.gif through 77.gif. It's not hard to do at the shell. The only real tricky part is that you need to work backwards, starting at 76.gif and moving down. -
