Filepro

(NEWEST POST)
Why I love Unix I was first exposed to Unix on a Radio Shack Model 16. It was running Tandy Xenix and up to that minute I hadn't even read anything about Unix. That may sound odd, but this was almost thirty years ago: Internet access was rare and just starting to be available to people not in government or academia and computer books and magazines were equally scant. The computer revolution was just starting and so was my Unix education.
Filepro conversion As is so unfortunately typical of FP code, it's pretty bad stuff. That's not FP's fault, maybe it's not any body's fault. The language doesn't encourage bad programming, but it doesn't discourage it either. However, the stuff basically worked. They wanted a few changes, so for the past few years I've added little stuff here and there. The last time I made any changes was about six months back, and that was just a new report to produce CSV files. And then..
Filepro spaghetti However: the downside of Filepro was its weak programming language. When I first used it (1983, beta version on Tandy Xenix) it didn't even have gosub and it had severe problems with floating point numbers..and although it did get better and more powerful, its "if:then" base and extremely limited namespace for variables made for a lot of difficult and confused code. Some folks would even have worse to say, and I would not disagree.
