Administration

(NEWEST POST)
How secure do you want to be? You probably get a good deal of email, letters and phone calls warning you about computer security. The general idea is the same: your systems are threatened, we can stop the threat. The cost of the remedy is seldom mentioned up front. but there are lots of buzz words to make up for any lack of specifics. "Intrusion detection", "secure firewall", "hackers", "Security assessment" and more.
Backup mistakes you might be making Yesterday I found myself in a situation no one ever wants to be in: I needed to restore a file from a customer's backups, but could not because no backups existed. How did we get to this abominable condition? Through a series of mistakes and bad practices. Are you making any of these mistakes?
The Practice of System and Network Administration (second edition) The broad coverage is a bit unexpected: there's a chapter on Being Happy, chapters on hiring and firing - I'm surprised that there isn't a chapter on being fired, though I suppose if you religiously followed the advice here, maybe you needn't worry about that.
