Fear of fsck I've heard similar things in the past. The fear is that fsck will "make things worse". The system is running now, it's working (or at least mostly working), so why tempt fate? The mental analogy here seems to be one of going in for surgery and dying from the anesthesia.
The Missing Manual: Mac OSX Leopard Edition I was impressed by how much I learned in just the first hundred pages or so - and I don't mean "that's cute but I'd never use it" but useful, "yes, I need to remember that!" stuff. The rest of the book didn't disappoint either. I can't say that I learned something in every chapter, but I never stopped picking things up throughout.
How can I restrict who can login with ssh? We often have systems that have run for years with no connection to the outside world, and now suddenly an Internet connection is added and ssh access is set up. Unfortunately, many users have weak or even blank passwords. If only some users need to use ssh, it's best to set up new users with strong passwords and restrict ssh to only those users.
