2005/01/26 i-name

This is an early attempt to provide world-wide identity information - ala Microsoft's Passport, but open and member owned. It's not much at this point, but I registered =pcunix anyway, because supporting this sort of effort is (I think) important. As they say in their acknowledgement email:

Identity Commons will be using the proceeds to build open source
software and shared infrastructure to make your i-name and i-broker
more and more valuable as a way to control your identity and share
data over the Internet. Your participation in this program is
helping to make all of this possible.

As a our way of saying thank you we've just registered your i-name
for the next 50 years. This i-name is yours until the year 2054
and includes free hosting and services (courtesy of 2idi) through
all of 2005.

As you may know, the Early Global Services program is limited to
150,000 of these special 50-year i-names and we expect them go
fast. Pass the word to your family, friends, and business associates
- once the EGS program is over a global personal i-name is expected
to cost between $10 to $20 annually.

There's more complete explanation at http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/7888 and at http://identitycommons.net/.
