I noticed today that Google has restored most of my Page Rank - the home page is back to PR5 and so are a number of other pages. That's good news..
I was surprised on two counts: first that Google responded to my request for reconsideration so quickly, and secondly that they did restore so much of it: I honestly thought Google was adjusting their PR scale to make 5's and 6's much harder to attain.
I requested reconsideration just seven days ago. The alacrity of the response is surprising considering that they themselves say such requests take weeks, and that other people seem to be waiting a long time.. though since Google didn't actually tell me they had restored anything, those who are waiting may be waiting in vain: the decision to do nothing may have already been made, because apparently that's all you get, a decision. No notification, no "We have concluded our review and.."
Oh well. I'm happy about this, even though there was no drop in search engine referrals while it was low and advertising earnings weren't affected either.. well, whatever PR is good for, I have it back.
One thing that does seem to have changed is how long it takes for a new page to gain any PR, so I think it is possible that Google has changed some algorithms there. It used to be that new pages here would start gaining PR after three or four months, but I now see pages over a year old that still are PR0. Now sure, it's possible that none of those pages have attracted any links, but I think that's unlikely, and in fact I know that many of them have gained enough links that I would expect them to have something by now.. but they don't. I think Google has quietly changed something in this area.
But it's all supposition, right? My change in PR might have nothing to do with that reconsideration request at all, and the lack of PR on pages where I expect it could be just coincidence and circumstance..
Whatever.. there are surely more important things to be doing.

Many of the products and books I review are things I purchased for my own use. Some were given to me specifically for the purpose of reviewing them. I resell or can earn commissions from the sale of some of these items. Links within these pages may be affiliate links that pay me for referring you to them. That's mostly insignificant amounts of money; whenever it is not I have made my relationship plain. I also may own stock in companies mentioned here. If you have any question, please do feel free to contact me.
Specific links that take you to pages that allow you to purchase the item I reviewed are very likely to pay me a commission. Many of the books I review were given to me by the publishers specifically for the purpose of writing a review. These gifts and referral fees do not affect my opinions; I often give bad reviews anyway.
