linux & unix have been an unruly, writhing mass of worms as long as
they've been around, and Mac OS X just adds another (or two; BSD & Next)
layer of crap to the pile. To save myself time and trouble, and attempt
to ensure things work as intended, .bashrc is an actual file, containing
what I want. .profile & .bash_profile are symlinks pointing at .bashrc
