User login hangs for many seconds before password prompt comes up. )

If this is a SCO box, see http://aplawrence.com/cgi-bin/ta.pl?112062 (fixed by rs506a).

But if this is telnet being slow to issue the login prompt, see Telnet/FTP is very slow to connect (any OS, including Linux). . That's a DNS issue. Otherwise..



If not, and it is SCO, the problem here is that the /etc/auth/ttys file gets screwed up. You'll find a /etc/auth/ttys-t file. Don't remove it; just run "tcbck". The TA above just shows you how to write a script to check for a ttys-t file every 5 minutes and run tcbck if it finds it.
