This article is from a FAQ concerning SCO operating systems. While some of the information may be applicable to any OS, or any Unix or Linux OS, it may be specific to SCO Xenix, Open Desktop or Openserver.

There is lots of Linux, Mac OS X and general Unix info elsewhere on this site: Search this site is the best way to find anything.

Unix, Xenix and ODT General FAQ

User login hangs for many seconds before password prompt comes up. )

If this is a SCO box, see http://aplawrence.com/cgi-bin/ta.pl?112062 (fixed by rs506a).

But if this is telnet being slow to issue the login prompt, see Telnet/FTP is very slow to connect (any OS, including Linux). . That's a DNS issue. Otherwise..

If not, and it is SCO, the problem here is that the /etc/auth/ttys file gets screwed up. You'll find a /etc/auth/ttys-t file. Don't remove it; just run "tcbck". The TA above just shows you how to write a script to check for a ttys-t file every 5 minutes and run tcbck if it finds it.

Your site is mighty fucked up. Pages have nothing in them or content is at the bootom, links are everywhere, content links don't actually work. Best spend some time figuring out how to do the web thing. y'all. Very disappointing.

Not very helpful..

WHAT links did you have trouble with? WHAT pages with WHAT browser didn't display correctly?

This is a big, big site that has articles in it dating back to 1991 - naturally there will be links that don't work. And we certainly do have some broken pages here and there, but I can't fix them if you just leave vague complaints like this.

By the way, I took the time to check the logs: I don't see any page you visited that has broken links or would have displayed improperly.. so I have no idea how to help you without your being more specific.

Actually, I found it: you went to http://aplawrence.com/SCOFAQ/FAQ_telnetslow.html

That page did have a display problem, which I've fixed.. might have helped if you had left your comment on a page you actually had the problem on!

I see you also looked at http://aplawrence.com/MacOSX/xupport.html

If your browser window is too narrow, the first graphic image could push down very low on the page, leaving a lot of white space.. I don't know any way to avoid that - if you do, I'm happy to learn.

(I'm sure there IS a way - I just don't know it. I thought doing img style="overflow:hidden;" might correct that, but nope. Must be a way: I see other websites that don't flow like that..)

My son-in-law told me to check out http://developer.yahoo.com/yui/grids/#available_templates

Those will work nicely - it will take me a few days to implement.

I just love it when someone waltzes in, has a *little* trouble with one page out of hundreds and then proclaims that your site is all f**ked up. Nothing like a little tact and diplomacy to get things taken care of, eh?

Actually, I'm glad he/she did.

Even so, I can't see how someone can just let loose with the invective over something that was made available to them at no cost. I run in defective pages all the time but don't rant at the webmaster because of it. If it's too difficult for me to read I move on.

Agree that it's unhelpful to say "your site is broken", also not usually best to put this in comments about an article. Personally I go with email webmaster@domain.com with URL/browser/version/os, but only if I happen to like the site (ie, not gonna bother for microsoft.com, have done for mozilla.com)

cheers for info on stuff anyway
