I edited my gettydefs and things broke

You can check gettydefs using /etc/getty -c /etc/gettydefs; this command will print out everything you could possibly want to know, and then some. Common mistakes include not leaving a blank line between entries or having a cycle of settings but forgetting to close the loop (e.g. if 1 fails, use 2; if 2 fails, use 3; if 3 fails, you forgot to tell it to go back to 1).
