Tony Lawrence: Girl With A Shovel

One fine summer day at Moonstone Beach a couple with a three or four year old daughter was sprawled near our blanket. Mom and Dad had succumbed to the summer heat. Mom was on her stomach, but Dad had curled up on his side, and was snoring gently.

Their daughter was busily engaged in digging a trench that had started at her mother's head, came around Dad, and was now proceeding down in front of him.

Now Dad was what we'd politely call well endowed. Even in the warm summer sun, most of us would need at least an arm or a leg to present any sort of obstacle to a little girl digging a trench. But this particular Dad had a member prodigious enough that the trench would have had to deviate significantly from the design his daughter obviously had in mind.

My wife and I watched surreptitiously as she got nearer to the point where Dad was dangling in her path. Sure enough, she reached his stomach area and paused.

She looked back at his face. Dad was still cutting Z's.

She looked again at the "obstacle", hesitated for just a moment, then reached out with two dainty fingers, picked it up, and moved it out of her way.

She then continued digging her trench while my wife and I smothered our laughter in our blankets :-)
