Microsoft wants to inflict it's Open XML "standard" on the rest of us. Linux folk are obviously against that idea and with good reason.
Microsoft of course couldn't resist leaving things to chance, so it sent what it calls an "unfortunate" email urging its big partners to join ISO organizations to be able to participate in the vote. Microsoft displayed its concerns for the propriety of such an action by requesting that those partners attend more meetings after the vote in order to prove "their sincere participation"
Right. Nothing insincere about signing up at the last minute in exchange for extra "marketing contributions". This all came out in Sweden, which has since declared its vote in favor of Open XML invalid - though for "technical reasons" - I guess they don't want to point any fingers at Microsoft.
You just have to admire the morals of Microsoft, don't you?

Many of the products and books I review are things I purchased for my own use. Some were given to me specifically for the purpose of reviewing them. I resell or can earn commissions from the sale of some of these items. Links within these pages may be affiliate links that pay me for referring you to them. That's mostly insignificant amounts of money; whenever it is not I have made my relationship plain. I also may own stock in companies mentioned here. If you have any question, please do feel free to contact me.
Specific links that take you to pages that allow you to purchase the item I reviewed are very likely to pay me a commission. Many of the books I review were given to me by the publishers specifically for the purpose of writing a review. These gifts and referral fees do not affect my opinions; I often give bad reviews anyway.

Leopards don't change their spots, and convicted monopolists don't change their ways. Microsoft is starting to sweat over the real possibility that their MS Office monopoly in the business world will slip away and be replaced by open standards. Were that to happen, their Office revenue stream would substantially diminish, as it is sales of the overpriced Office suite that generates the big bucks around Redmond. Take that away and you have a Microsoft forced to subsist on the sales of a half-assed operating system.
