To:Microlite Corporation - Friends / NDA Contacts Partners/ Testers / Opt-Ins From: Tom Podnar - President - Microlite Date: 04-March-2003 Subject: BackupEDGE SS 01.02.04 Build 1 Released BackupEDGE SS 01.02.04 (Build 1) is now available. ---------------------------------------------------------------- This release is REQUIRED for the new OpenServer 5.0.7 and UnixWare 7.1.3 products. No other release can be registered or activated on these platforms. This is primarily due to changes made to RecoverEDGE. ---------------------------------------------------------------- We're happy to report that both OpenServer 5.0.7 and UnixWare 7.1.3 support ATAPI and USB CD and DVD devices. This should really decrease the total cost of ownership on these platforms. A lot of work has gone into updating our DVD handling code. As a result... o Our DVD strategy has been improved, resulting in write and readspeed increases across all media types ranging from nominal to dramatic. o Multi-funtion, multi format devices such as the Panasonic SW-9571 (aka LF-D521U) and Sony DRU-500A have been qualified. o All 5 DVD Formats (DVD-RAM, DVD+RW, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD-R) arenow fully supported (in addition to CD-R and CD-RW, of course). Fully supported means that... o During device autodetection, all valid media types supported by the device are detected and appropriate media preparation, write and re-write strategies are created. o When BackupEDGE SS starts, it examines the currently insertedmedia and determines the type, speed, volume size and write strategy automatically. o CD-RW media will automatically be blanked before rewrite. DVD media will be pre-formatted, blanked or initialized when necessary. All of this means that no intervention on the part of the user is required. Just insert the media desired and BackupEDGE SS will take care of the rest. It is even possible (although not recommended) to have volume one of an archive written on one type of media (say DVD-RAM) and then use another type, such as a DVD-R, to write volume two. We recommend that all BackupEDGE SS clients using optical media upgrade to 01.02.04 Build 1. For 01.01.08 and earlier users there is a nominal upgrade charge. For 01.02.00 through 01.02.03 users, the update is downloadable at no charge through our web site. 01.02.03 users may also use the auto update capabilities built into EDGEMENU to download and install the update. Please delete and re-detect all optical storage devices after installing the update. More information on supported devices can be found by browsing to the Microlite Corporation website, then clicking on "Products" followed by "Device Compatibility". More Floppy Support ------------------- Linux users can make 1.44MB, 1.68MB or 1.72MB RecoverEDGE Media. OpenServer 5.0.7 users can make 1.44MB or 1.68MB RecoverEDGE Media. Of course, CD, DVD, OBDR and DRTape boot media and BootableBackups are all supported. Additional Changes ------------------ A problem with index compression under UnixWare / Open UNIX 8 is resolved. This should be a mandatory upgrade for all 01.02.0x users with these operating systems. Linux users of newer systems without floppy support in the kernel can now make bootable optical or tape media and images for RecoverEDGE. Training Opportunity -------------------- An advanced BackupEDGE SS Reseller Certification class is being held in Las Vegas NV on Wednesday April 23, 2003 at the Tropicana Resort and Casino. Resellers may contact lois@microlite.com for additional information. Many of the products and books I review are things I purchased for my own use. Some were given to me specifically for the purpose of reviewing them. I resell or can earn commissions from the sale of some of these items. Links within these pages may be affiliate links that pay me for referring you to them. That's mostly insignificant amounts of money; whenever it is not I have made my relationship plain. I also may own stock in companies mentioned here. If you have any question, please do feel free to contact me.
Specific links that take you to pages that allow you to purchase the item I reviewed are very likely to pay me a commission. Many of the books I review were given to me by the publishers specifically for the purpose of writing a review. These gifts and referral fees do not affect my opinions; I often give bad reviews anyway.
