extra copies of CD-ROMs.
- Low cost promotions and evaluations: Resellers and users want a
low cost method for providing evaluation and promotional software.
- Users that do not require Installation Diskettes or Hard-Copy
documentation: Diskettes can be created from images on the
Installation CD-ROM and all documentation is available on the CD-ROMs
for printing or viewing with HTML.
Both the Open UNIX 8 Release 8.0.0 Standard Media Kit and the Compact
Media Kit provide fully localized operating system versions for English,
German, French and Spanish including locales, keyboard and printer
configurations, translated system messages, user interfaces and online
documentation. Locales, printer configurations and keyboard mappings exist
for many other languages as well. The Standard Media Kit also includes
localized hard copy documentation available in English, French, German and
Spanish. This is the initial release of Open UNIX 8 and as an aide to
current UnixWare 7 Release 7.1.1 customers, areas where this new Media Kit

11 System Requirements
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
The hardware that you will need to support an installation of Open UNIX 8
will vary depending on the installation options you choose. All
installations have the following minimum requirements:
Processor:
At least one Intel Pentium microprocessor, or a microprocessor that
is 100 percent compatible with the same. Many installations will
require a 100MHz (or faster) Pentium processor for better performance.
Systems running Merge 5.1 from the Optional Services CD should have a
200MHz or faster Pentium processor.
Architecture:
Conformance to the Industry Standard Architecture (ISA) (also
called an AT bus), Extended Industry Standard Architecture (EISA),
Peripheral Component Interface (PCI), or Intelligent Input/Output
(I2O) standards.
Memory:
32MB or more of RAM (Random Access Memory). For optimal CDE and
Java performance 64MB of RAM is required. Performance is enhanced
as more RAM is added. See the table below.
Disk size and partitions:
A hard disk of 1GB or larger is recommended. See the table below.
Small footprint installations can run on systems with 300MB or
larger UNIX partitions. Other installation types can run on a UNIX
partition of 500MB or larger.
Mouse:
A serial, bus, or PS/2-compatible mouse is recommended to access
all graphical desktop functionality.
Video:
A Super VGA monitor and video adapter capable of at least 800x600
resolution is required to run the graphical desktop. Systems
running Merge from the Optional Services CD will require a
1280x1024 16-bit (or better) graphics adapter.
Media devices:
A 3.5-inch diskette drive for booting the Open UNIX 8 system and
installing additional software is required if:
- you want to perform an installation from the media kit
CD-ROMs and your system does not support bootable CD-ROMs
(see ``Bootable CD-ROM support'', below)
- you need to install vendor-supplied software (such as device
drivers) from diskettes
- you want to perform a network install, which requires using the
network installation diskettes (from the Base OS Installation
CD)
Note that a diskette drive is also required to generate emergency
recovery media.
One of the following installation media devices is required:
- a CD-ROM drive for installation from media kit CD-ROMs
- a supported network adapter, and a preconfigured network
installation server, for network installation
Use the following table as a further guideline for determining the
memory and hard disk configuration required for the software you want
to install:
