Zoom in

2008/09/20

I thought every Mac user knew about this, but I have found quite a few that did not, so I'm mentioning it here "just in case". It's "zooming" and I believe it is enabled by default - if not, you'll find it is System Preferences, Keyboard and Mouse, Trackpad (assuming you have a trackpad). It also works with a scroll wheel mouse and if for some reason you have neither, it's available as hot-keys in Universal Access, Seeing, Zoom (that's NOT on by default).

With a Trackpad, you hold Ctrl and then with two fingers on the pad, you can zoom in or out. With a scroll wheel mouse, just hold Ctrl and use the scroll wheel. With Universal Access turned on, the default is Cmd-Opt-Hyphen (-) and Cmd-Opt-Equal (=).

This can make all the difference in the world if you are trying to show something to a room full of people with or without a projection device. These camera shots show the difference:

No Zoom

no zooming

Some Zoom

some zooming

More Zoom

more zooming

That last is not as far as it goes, though images do start getting very pixelated after that.

Many of the products and books I review are things I purchased for my own use. Some were given to me specifically for the purpose of reviewing them.

I resell or can earn commissions from the sale of some of these items. Links within these pages may be affiliate links that pay me for referring you to them. That's mostly insignificant amounts of money; whenever it is not I have made my relationship plain. I also may own stock in companies mentioned here. If you have any question, please do feel free to contact me.
