Just buy the Mac

March 2006

Microsoft's yet to be Vista OS has been delayed again, and more features have dropped to the cutting room floor. Now they have pushed it off to 2007.. and I bet they won't make that deadline either.

What's the problem? What else can it be but crappy code? In 2004 Microsoft recognized that its current code base was utter junk so they bit the bullet and made a fresh start.

But remember what Chairman Bill said then:

It's obviously my role to ask people, 'Hey, let's not throw things
out we shouldn't throw out. Let's keep things in that we can keep
in.'

In other words, it's Bill's job to pump crap back into the clean waters of a newly written OS. Apparently he's been doing a bang-up job at that. I'm of course only guessing, but I imagine that the grafting of old code onto new is one of their major problems here.

In the meantime, we already have Mac OS X Tiger, which you can buy RIGHT NOW and it is everything that Windows Vista promises to be someday. Maybe. If they can fix it.

Oh, and if you do live long enough to buy Vista, apparently Microsoft wants to be as confusing as the new Medicare Drug Plan: you'll have at least five different versions to choose from.

Isn't that nice? Poor Apple only has two versions: desktop and server. Gosh, five is so much better than two, isn't it?. So much more.. confusing, both for the original purchaser and for the support folk who come along later.

Let's see: "Basic" has "improved reliability" while "Premium" promises to deliver a "more complete and satisfying computing experience". But wait: there's "Ultimate", which says I "don't have to compromise" if I choose it. So does that mean that "Enterprise" is a compromise? Or is "Enterprise" only a compromise compared to "Business"?

Which one is the buggiest right this minute?

Are you due for a new PC at home or at the office? Why don't you blow these bumbling boobs a good-bye kiss and get yourself a new Mac? You'll spend just a teeny, tiny bit more but you'll get a real OS packed with everything you need. What you won't get is empty promises, confusion, and bad code.

And around the time Microsoft announces its next delay for Vista, Mac will probably be pushing out its Leopard version which will continue to improve what is already a superb computing environment.

But no, you should wait for Bill's Vista-stein concoction. It will be fine. Someday. Maybe. You hope.

Five years and waiting..

Many of the products and books I review are things I purchased for my own use. Some were given to me specifically for the purpose of reviewing them. I resell or can earn commissions from the sale of some of these items. Links within these pages may be affiliate links that pay me for referring you to them. That's mostly insignificant amounts of money; whenever it is not I have made my relationship plain. I also may own stock in companies mentioned here. Specific links that take you to pages that allow you to purchase the item I reviewed are very likely to pay me a commission. Many of the books I review were given to me by the publishers specifically for the purpose of writing a review. These gifts and referral fees do not affect my opinions; I often give bad reviews anyway.
