AIX 5.1 Installation Document
NOTE: Screenshots are from an ASCII installation of AIX 5.1 using Windows HyperTerminal.
1. This is the pseries 6H1 B.U.M.P. menu. To get this menu just hit the enter key on the keyboard with power off, and OK on the display of the server.
Type in 2. This will give you the power on menu.
Now power the unit up by typing in 4.
The server will power up and start the boot process from NVRAM. When the R/S 6000 screen appears, and before the word speaker appears on the screen, hit the 1 key (ASCII) or F1 key (GUI) to get the next menu selection.
Now select the option 2. Multiboot to select the installation bootable device you want.
Select Option 3 Install From.
Now since we are installing from a CD, we will select the CDROM device to install from.
It now will tell you what is on the media, and at what level of O/S you will be installing.
Select 1, and the installing starts.
Now type in 2 and then <enter> to select the ASCII console.
Now type in 1.
At the BOS installation and maintenance menu type in a 2, to change installation settings.
Next choose 1, to change the system settings of the installation.
Select 1 to select a New & Complete Overwrite of the image disk.
You will now choose the hdisk that you want to install the rootvg image too. In this case I have chosen hdisk0. After you have selected the disk, indicated by >>>, select 0 to continue the installation process.
At this point we have chosen the settings to install AIX 5. Now select 0 to start the installation process, shown in the next THREE panels.
After completion of installation, configuration assistant will appear.
Set the date and time.
Set the time zone.
Set root�s password. Don�t worry about strength yet, because we will configure that for a stronger password policy later.
Next create hostname and IP address configurations in Network Communications. Select TCP Startup, and configure the adapter that you will be using eth0, eth1, atm0, etc. You will build the minimal tcp/ip configuration file here, as shown in the next 5 panels
Next configure paging space. Because of the size of physical memory on modern servers, taking the default variable is sufficient for initial swap space on AIX servers. This is shown in the next 4 panels.
That is it for configuration assistant. We can now exit, and we will generate our initial default herald login, as shown in the next 2 panels.
After entering username and password to obtain a shell, enter smitty installp and put the expansion pack cd for AIX 5 in the cdrom.
Next select Netscape Communicator US filesets, as shown in the next 4 panels.
Now you can use Netscape to update the server to the latest maintanence level. This is the final step in the base install of AIX 5.1.0.
