Are you sure it was specifically an oversize message and not just a complaint
about a failed attempt at reading a block beyond the end of the filesystem? 
fsck would fix the latter if caused by fs corruption, but this particular
message: 

"DANGER: Filesystem being checked is larger than the device in which it is
stored"

comes from a comparison of the filesystem size as stored in the superblock to
the (experimentally determined via read-attempt-binary-search!) size of the
device (partition, division, whatever) that the filesystem is stored on,
neither of which will be altered by fsck.
