Well, I've tried Samba v 2.0.7 and it's pretty GUI configurable
via browser: actually, the utility you can use to do it is called
SWAT (Samba Web Admin Tool - or something similar).

My Unix and Linux Troubleshooting E-Book will show you how to solve tough system problems!

Not 100% sure about it.

I don't want to start a flame war here but I'm only aiming
at providing my personal experience with Samba under SCO
OS5 and UnixWare (as the Yankees say, "Just my 2 cents" :-)

I've downloaded v 2.0.7 from the Samba site and I've compiled
it under SCO OpenServer 5.0.5 (fully patched) with no
errors; a customer of ours (who actually started a flame
war between Samba & VisionFS) provided me with a Windows
binary which, once executed on a Win9x machine, was able
to write several chunks of data on the remote OS5
machine.

In a nutshell, on that Windows machine he:

1) remotely mounted the "/usr/fred" directory as virtual drive "D:"
2) started a Win app phisically located on the OS5 server itself
3) that Windows app wrote several archives on drive "D:" by making use
of the Windows locking scheme

During my tests I've discovered that VisionFS is WAY faster than
its counterpart; I can't remember the exact numbers right now
but the writing of the archives under Samba was 10/20 times
SLOWER than under VisionFS.

I've tried by disabling every locking feature in the Samba
config file only toget a small boost in performance.

It's pointless to say that the machines involed in the above
tests did not change during the above tests (they were
connected via a single crossed cable in order to avoid
to interfere with our local network).

The strange thing is that I've compiled the SAME version of
Samba under SCO UnixWare 7.1.0 and, under this platform, the
overall results were quite similar.

Again, just my 2 cents.

Best,
Roberto
