Bad idea. See:
        http://www.cruzio.com/~jeffl/sco/snmp_install.txt
for how to setup SNMP on OSR5. What I don't know is which OID to write
to do the shutdown. See setany(ADMN):
        http://stage.caldera.com/cgi-bin/ssl_getmanpage?setany+ADMN+OS5
for how to write to an OID. However, having the UPS control the server,
instead of the server polling the UPS, is a bad idea.

Your unspecified APC UPS probably has an APC AP-9605 SNMP module. If
you're thinking of using it to initiate a shutdown, be advised that this
module will initiate an SNMP trap, but not perform an SNMP write to a
specific OID. If the UPS is in control, you have limited intelligence
available to do the shutdown. Instead, I suggest you use APC's
PowerChute software to monitor and poll (no traps or writes) the AP-9605,
and have the OSR5 box decide for itself when it shutdown.

Many of the products and books I review are things I purchased for my own use. Some were given to me specifically for the purpose of reviewing them. I resell or can earn commissions from the sale of some of these items. Links within these pages may be affiliate links that pay me for referring you to them. That's mostly insignificant amounts of money; whenever it is not I have made my relationship plain. I also may own stock in companies mentioned here. If you have any question, please do feel free to contact me.

Specific links that take you to pages that allow you to purchase the item I reviewed are very likely to pay me a commission. Many of the books I review were given to me by the publishers specifically for the purpose of writing a review. These gifts and referral fees do not affect my opinions; I often give bad reviews anyway.
