This is a Unix/Linux resource website. It contains technical articles about Unix, Linux and general computing related subjects, opinion, news, help files, how-to's, tutorials and more. We appreciate comments and article submissions.
Many of the products and books I review are things I purchased for my own use. Some were given to me specifically for the purpose of reviewing them. I resell or can earn commissions from the sale of some of these items. Links within these pages may be affiliate links that pay me for referring you to them. That's mostly insignificant amounts of money; whenever it is not I have made my relationship plain. I also may own stock in companies mentioned here. I've been trying to install Sco Openserver 5 on VMWare4, with WinXP pro as host OS and I fail to install SCO, following the instructions given on this post :o(
2 problems occur:
1 - error: "restart not found" when booting from CD-Rom (So I can't use the restart command at the boot prompt
2 - when using the startup floppy, the SCO install recognizes the virtual HDD, but I get stuck on a "/dev/install/" not found....
In the original chinese article on http://www.chinaunix.net/bbsjh/4/11249.html those problems also seem to occur, but I do not understand chinese...
Pls could anybody help me out????

Hi, I spent ages looking around the web and didn't find anything useful. In desperation I went into the BIOS and edited the IDE disk settings. I had created a 4GB disk so the following settings reflect that:
User, Cyl 8322, Heads 16, Sectors 63, Max Cap 4295MB, LBA, Tot Sec 8388608, Max Cap 4295MB, Multi-Sec 16 sec, LBA Enabled, 32 bit I/O Disabled, Transfer Standard, Ultra DMA Disabled
I also had a problem with booting the CD where it complained the memory was too fragmented so I used the following string at the boot prompt: restart mem=1m-64m
Hope this helps

I works, but necessary is boot from CD-ROM, not from floppy.
I have following configuration, and it works fine (only in character mode, GUI crashes VMWare):
- VMWare Workstation 5.5
- emulated IDE disk
- SCO OpenServer 5.05
Instalation without additional parameters (defaults)

Try helping yourself with Tony's powerful search facilities. However, let me dangle a little carrot in front of you:
Typically, the BIOS can only access the first 1024 cylinders of the drive. This is not a problem once Unix is up and running, but it is the built in BIOS that starts the boot process is used for the first stages , so it's usually important to be sure that the /stand filesystem will always fall under that limit. Remember, this is a limitation of the BIOS, not of SCO Unix.
This should get you started. You should also search for and read the articles about how OSR5 gets itself going. http://aplawrence.com/Boot/boot.html is a good place to start.
