We are told that a similar panic was corrected by the HP EFS version
5.54a.  A bit of searching on the HP web site shows that the newest
version is 5.58a, and a page that points to various versions is at:

  http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/revision/1912.html

It looks like 5.48a was the last version claiming to support your
Proliant 1600.  Later versions have this note:

" Note: EFS 5.58 contains the new hp ProLiant Advanced System Management
" Driver "cpqasm" which only supports servers with Advanced System
" Management capabilities (ASM). EFS 5.58 does not contain the legacy
" System Management Driver "cpqw". System Management Driver support "cpqw"
" for legacy servers can be obtained from EFS 5.46. It is important to
" note that ProLiant servers can not load both drivers simultaneously.
" Installing EFS 5.58 on a pre-ASM server will complete successfully
" without loading the hp ProLiant Advanced System Management Driver.
" Without System Management Driver support the Insight Management Agents
" will not provide full functionality. For pre-ASM servers it is highly
" recommended that users retain "cpqw" support released in EFS 5.46. For
" more information on the System Management Driver Update please refer to
" the EFS man pages.

I _think_ this means you can install 5.58a as long as you first install
something (your 5.44a might be sufficient, or you might want to go with
their recommended 5.46a or 5.48a) containing the old "cpqw" driver.

The notes on EFS releases 5.50a through 5.56a refer to 5.48a for "cpqw";
5.58a refers to 5.46a.  I don't know what to make of that; you might
need help from HP Support to untangle this.
