Subject: smp_num_cpus undeclared in 2.4.x: solved
Date: 26 Dec 2001 16:13:57 -0800

Hi,

I just had a problem with trying to do a kernel build with 2.4.16, and
getting an error message about smp_num_cpus being undeclared. I
eventually figured it out so I thought I'd post my solution in hopes
of saving someone else some time.

"make menuconfig" does more than just turn on and off certain flags in
the config file, it also conditionally shows you certain options based
on other settings, and when you make a choice for one parameter, it
can change other parameters. Thus it's essential to modify your
config file with menuconfig rather than do it by hand.

What I had done is run "make menuconfig" to get everything how I
wanted it, and then I added an option by hand by editing .config
directly. The option I added was CONFIG_IP_NF_COMPAT_IPCHAINS, which
I didn't see in menuconfig, because I hadn't enabled the right
parameters. Under the submenu called 'Netfilter
configuration' ipchains compatibility is only available if both
connection tracking and iptables are modular/disabled.

Adding this parameter by hand (incorrectly) is what resulted in the
kernel "make" not loading the right files and thus the symbol was
undefined.

If you have a problem like this that you can't fix, I'd recommend
copying your .config file out to another directory such as /tmp, doing
"make mrproper" in the kernel source directory, running "make
menuconfig", loading the old config file, and then finishing your
configuration with "make menuconfig". I assume the same thing applies
to "make xconfig" but I didn't try it.

Happy hacking.

Many of the products and books I review are things I purchased for my own use. Some were given to me specifically for the purpose of reviewing them. I resell or can earn commissions from the sale of some of these items. Links within these pages may be affiliate links that pay me for referring you to them. That's mostly insignificant amounts of money; whenever it is not I have made my relationship plain. I also may own stock in companies mentioned here. Specific links that take you to pages that allow you to purchase the item I reviewed are very likely to pay me a commission. Many of the books I review were given to me by the publishers specifically for the purpose of writing a review. These gifts and referral fees do not affect my opinions; I often give bad reviews anyway.
