Somehow, I detect that you have experience with the Windoze way.  There's
a big difference between the Windoze way, and the Unix way.  In Windoze
printing, Microsoft got fed up with applications talking directly to
devices and doing their own print formatting.  Prior to Windoze, every
application was responsible for formatting its own output and therefore
had its own printer drivers.  Most did a rotten job of this which
inspirec Microsloth to relieve the applications of this responsibility
and moving the printer formatting to the Windoze operating system.  The
application talks to Windoze and Windoze does the printing.  That
advantage is that a every application on the Windoze box can use all the
features of the printer, without each one having their own printer
drivers.

Unix doesn't work that way.  The applications still control the output
formatting.  Unix just supplies print spooling.  In the case of remote
network print servers, even spooling is optional.  Therefore, the printer
"driver" is part of the application, not the operating system.
Similarly, there are no "supported" printers in Unix as any printer that
does not rely on Windoze to do its rasterization (i.e. WinPrinters), will
work.

The stock HPLaserJet print spooler script supplies quite a bit of print
output formatting, which I consider to be an un-necessary abomination.
The top of the file is readable and includes instructions for its use.
Whether an application can use all the colorful features of the HP4550N
is dependent on the application, not the print spooler script.
