Earlier, Microsoft said that it would allow "pirated" Windows XP to download SP2, supposedly because they felt it was more important to have patched systems than worry about illegal installs. Well, either that was some reporters fantasy, or someone farther up the chain decided that lost sales are more important. I liked the quote:



.. using genuine software is an important part of keeping systems
secure and running smoothly because it means continued access to
the latest security enhancements and product updates.


Umm, but if you didn't check for "genuine software" wouldn't the pirate stuff HAVE "access to the latest security enhancements and product updates"?

    @loudmouthman: correct, but how do you prove ANYTHING like that is accurate? You can't. A text file is no better or worse than anything.

    @loudmouthman: well, a digital signature could prove it hadn't been altered. Text is no more insecure than anything else in that sense.
