In an interview with PC Magazine (March 16 2004, page 6), Bill Gates says "You actually don't need to have a router. You can set the firewall up on the PC itself directly".
There are a couple of short, uncomplimentary words that I could use to describe my reaction, but I'll leave 'em to your imagination.

@loudmouthman: well, a digital signature could prove it hadn't been altered. Text is no more insecure than anything else in that sense.

Despite what others may think, Gates is by no means the final authority on computer technology. Indeed, the generally poor quality of Microsoft software should settle any questions about just how much he really knows.
In any case, the notion of having a PC protect itself from the big, bad Internet smacks of the big, bad wolf guarding Little Red Riding Hood's grandma. Under no circumstances should any Windows powered box ever be directly connected to a broadband or DSL modem. Talk about sticking your neck out!
