I'm not sure that this necessarily represents anything sinister.
From the law firms point of view, somebody buying SCO is certainly a possibility, which would leave them holding the bag for the costs they had incurred. This gives them some compensation if it were sold.

I don't think it's sinister either. It just amuses me to see how much money lawyers can collect for doing a job that basically amounts to generating a lot of paperwork.
