Tue Feb 15 22:45:19 2005 File does not exist error from Microsoft Save As

Posted by Tony Lawrence

Recently I've been doing a lot of clean up and maintenance work on this site; fixing up errors, writing redirect rules to fix problems from referring sites, etc. Because of this, I've been spending more time looking at the error logs than I usually do.

I have been seeing a LOT of errors similar to this:

[Tue Feb 15 22:29:29 2005] [error] [client 65.96.14.162] File does
not exist: /usr/local/www/vhosts/vps.pcunix.com/htdocs/Bofcusm/ksh
history recall --Re Command Line Recall_files, referer:
http://aplawrence.com/Bofcusm/161.html

If I trace that back in the access_log, I'd find that the person was viewing (in this case) http://aplawrence.com/Bofusm/161.html

If you look at the error and examine the page, you'll see that the 161.html was replaced with the words from the page title tag plus "_files". As you would expect, that's an error, but I couldn't figure out where it was coming from. Finally I posted to comp.infosystems.www.authoring.html and a sharp-eyed Dave Patton noticed the "_files" and suggest that it might be due to "Save As, Web Page Complete". Sure enough, if I do that with IE, this annoying error appears in my logs.

Aren't the Microsoft bunch just the grandest programmers ever? Gosh, if they are this sharp just saving a page, imagine how brilliant their security measures must be..

So, Microsoft, I get to thank you again: spam from compromised systems fills up my mailbox, and your incompetence now helps fill up my weblogs. Microsoft's motto: what kind of junk do you want today?

Many of the products and books I review are things I purchased for my own use. Some were given to me specifically for the purpose of reviewing them. I resell or can earn commissions from the sale of some of these items. Links within these pages may be affiliate links that pay me for referring you to them. That's mostly insignificant amounts of money; whenever it is not I have made my relationship plain. I also may own stock in companies mentioned here. If you have any question, please do feel free to contact me.

Specific links that take you to pages that allow you to purchase the item I reviewed are very likely to pay me a commission. Many of the books I review were given to me by the publishers specifically for the purpose of writing a review. These gifts and referral fees do not affect my opinions; I often give bad reviews anyway.
