Unix and Linux Help, Resources and information for Unix/Linux, Mac OS X and other general computing related topics. Thousands of articles, reviews, consultants listings, skills tests, opinion, how-to's, suggestions and more. This is the Blog section, which always has the newest additions. There is new content daily, most of it exclusive to this site, and all of it is indexed and cross-referenced to help you find what you need. This is not yet another mirror of the Linux LDP or someone else's Unix FAQs. If you've never been here before, there's a lot to explore.
This month's topic is a follow-up to the bizarre situation with the rogue Systems Administrator in San Francisco. This e-newsletter deals with how organizations establish Privileged Account Management.
Somebody please explain this to me? Both McCain and Obama are now saying that we need to open up drilling in areas previously environmentally protected. Obama may be a bit more reluctant, but he still seems to be in favor.
Before we get started, what's the first word you think of when I say "email"?
(Phil has two issues):
I've been having some strange problems with my Mac Book Pro lately. Nothing very serious; it just doesn't always go to sleep when I tell it to. The screen goes blank, and the little "sleep" light comes on, but it doesn't blink, and the hard drive and fans are still running. Sometimes it will complete the transition after a few minutes, but often I've come back after hours to find it still halfway there.
I don't really like going to Boston, especially in hot weather. The train ride in is fine, but the air quality in the city is always bad, and of course is even worse after a few weeks of high temperature and little rain. As I walked up Summer Street this morning, I could see the haze of smog in the air ahead of me and I could feel it irritating my lungs. I unconsciously found myself trying to breathe shallowly while walking more quickly - not a winning combination.
Wassup? Nothing much, same old same old. Well, my wife's joint problems have gotten worse - more tears in L5, so more pain; she's barely hobbling along with a cane now. So that means she really can't take care of her Dad on Saturdays without my help, so I've been going with her to wheel the poor guy around for hours..
I had a small Linux server running Kerio at a local customer. The server had been put in quite a few years back; it didn't have a lot of disk space and it wasn't exactly a blazing performer in any sense.
My wife's father suffered a stroke several years back and has been in nursing homes since then. He's wheelchair bound, mostly aphasic, obviously depressed.. a very sad and unhappy man.
I recently wrote about a new poker site that pays cash prizes. It's a good place to play because of the serious competition, but if you looked at it from a strictly financial objective, they only offer one game that pays enough to be worthwhile: the $5,000.00 Sunday game that pays $1500.00 for first place. Anything else just has too little money in it to be worth spending time on (assuming that your only interest in playing is the money).
I had a customer move their office last week. Verizon said that "everything will be the same" - same IP, same type of T1, so in theory all they had to do was unplug their router(s), move them over, replug and all would be fine..
There's nothing wrong with our town water except that it sometimes has a strong chlorine taste. I don't mind that a whole lot if I'm just drinking a glass of water, but for some reason it really annoys me when I make tea.
This month's topic is about vendor management and granting system access to third party service providers.
I never owned a camcorder. When I considered how infrequently I'd have any use for one, I just couldn't justify the price. Yes, I am a product of generations of Yankee thrift.
I was waiting in the small lobby for someone to come down to fetch me. I had arrived early as I usually do, so I wasn't upset about waiting. I wouldn't have been upset anyway - I get paid by the hour whether I'm looking at pictures in the lobby or pecking away at a keyboard. I'm happy enough to wait and have enough random junk running around my brain to keep myself amused for hours after the pictures and magazines become old.
As many regular readers here know, I love playing poker, and particularly No Limit Hold'Em. I've played at most of the big name on-line poker sites and don't like any of them.. usually because there are too many "all-in all the time" players.
