The aplawrence.com site is hosted by Interland and is what they call a "Virtual Private Server" - which means that it's really shared hosting, but I have root access to my part of it. I've been generally happy with their reliability and pricing, though for the past few weeks we've been crashing regularly. They tell me that they will be doing a rebuild this week that should make us stable again.

Hate these ads?

I'm not really looking to switch, but I do like to look around to see what's out there. I do see ads for much lower pricing than what I pay, but often it turns out that either there's stuff missing that I need, or the reliability and connectivity isn't up to par. On the other hand, there have been a few that looked really good - sometimes almost too good to be true.

To me, stability and security are the most important features. Presently, this is a BSD system, but I wouldn't be adverse to Linux. Disk space is of secondary importance to me, but I do think that (given the cost of storage today) many places charge way too much for far too little. So after stability and security comes connectivity - I don't want a web server located out on the fringes with many hops to the backbones.

Many hosting sites make a big deal about backup, but I don't see that as critical: I maintain my own backups. Nor do I care about libraries of software tools - I won't use 'em anyway.

Price is the least important element, though I do tend to be a little too cheap to pay co-lo rates.

And how about you? If you have a website, what are your hot buttons? What providers have you had good or bad luck with? Do some of those ads seem "too good to be true" to you, also?

check out textdrive - not root access, but well maintained shared hosting.

I have been using Host For Web, and other than some performance issues, they have been good. The recently upgraded their reseller plans to include almost twice as much storage, for no price increase. I have 10 customers I resell too, and have not heard any complaints from them. They are very fast to respond to supoport requests, even in the middle of the night. I have been tempted to leave, because at times, I have logged in, and seen the load levels up to 120+ !! They claim, some spammer is using their email server, causing the high loads, and they usually find out who it is, and ban them quick, and the load levels come back down. I can remember trying to use vi on a file, and seeing 10-15 second pauses between typing. A 300 baud modem was faster!

They offer a lot with their plans, including Cpanel for all your customers, and the Fantistico script, which makes installing popular opensource web apps. a snap.

I used to use Interland but made the decision in early 2002 to host everything right here. I rarely see more than 20-30 page hits per week, so high volume transaction processing is not a concern.

One of our Uni-FI servers running OSR 5.0.6 supports the mail, web and DNS services. Other than occasional downtime due to extended power failure, to add patches to the OS or to kick out spiders and such that think a server makes a good home, the box just chugs away.

One of my clients at one time had a third party hosting their mail, DNS and web stuff. However, the spam levels started climbing and the company doing the hosting wasn't interested in trying to control the junk. So my client decided to move everything to their own hardware -- again, one of our Uni-FI servers running 5.0.6, Apache and Sendmail. That box also provides NAT to the office PC's and as of this writing, has an uptime of 383 days. Incidentally, my client subsequently discovered that the hosting company (which has since gone out of business) was peddling E-mail addresses to generate a little extra income.

I'm not adverse to off-site mail and web hosting. I'm just not comfortable with not being in control of it. <Grin>
