Google Trends

If you have any doubt that Linux is more important than Unix, take a peek at http://www.google.com/trends?q=unix%2C+linux.

Google Trends (which is what the above link is) lets you chart and compare search terms. Let's try Mac OS X vs. Windows XP.. hmm, looks like the East and West coast liberals might be Mac lovers, while the MidWest is less interested. On the other hand, Vista vs. Mac OS X generally shows little interest in Macs except, strangely, in New York.

You can also just use this to find data for individual search terms. Apparently SCO Unix is still fairly popular in Inda, but notice the downward trend.

By the way, folks in Delhi, India seem to be much more interested in sex than those staid midwesterners in Chicago. Does Windows dampen one's libido?

At least one web site suggests using this trend data as inspiration for writing. I don't like that: if you have two subjects you'd like to write about, I suppose you may as well choose the more popular of the two, but I can't see letting this choose your subject matter.

All very interesting..

You don't need a computer to tell you that. Just look at the population difference. <Grin>

In any case, we Chicagoans might appear to be staid, but once you shove aside the Roman Catholic church (with its own weird sex issues) and its vise-like grip on Chicago politics, you'll find we can forn...er...multiply with the best of 'em. <DirtyGrin>

Well, lack of search interest doesn't imply lack of ability.. perhaps the folks in Delhi have more need to search :-)

In other words, what you're saying is that they need to er...bone up on the subject. (Sorry for lame pun!)

Many of the products and books I review are things I purchased for my own use. Some were given to me specifically for the purpose of reviewing them. I resell or can earn commissions from the sale of some of these items. Links within these pages may be affiliate links that pay me for referring you to them. That's mostly insignificant amounts of money; whenever it is not I have made my relationship plain. I also may own stock in companies mentioned here. If you have any question, please do feel free to contact me.

Specific links that take you to pages that allow you to purchase the item I reviewed are very likely to pay me a commission. Many of the books I review were given to me by the publishers specifically for the purpose of writing a review. These gifts and referral fees do not affect my opinions; I often give bad reviews anyway.
