The "cp *.* /safe" is DOS syntax and will only match files that actually have "." in their name, and "cp ." does nothing.

cp * /safe will (normally) skip files starting with .; with cp * .* /safe
you copy everything. Of course, you'll get a few more complaints about skipping
directories `.' and `..'.
