New Mac Ads

Have you seen the new Mac ads? They are available at http://www.apple.com/getamac/ads/ if you haven't caught all of them yet.

My favorite is the "Restarting" ad, though the "Networking" is a close second. Here's what the Japanese portion of that means.

What interests me is not so much that these ads are a direct poke in the eye to Microsoft; it's the timing. U.S. tax season is over (IT activity falls off during tax season as companies are concentrating on accounting and taxes). More important, I think, is that the first previews of "Leopard" will be in early August at the WWDC (Apple's Developers convention). As far as anyone knows, Leopard itself is still on track for late 2006 or early 2007 release (while Vista may have slipped again).

Rumors of built-in virtualization and/or in-kernel Windows API in Leopard continue.. is Apple building up to a grand slam?.

Well, maybe. If the virtualization is true, I can't wait to see those ads. Maybe the Mac guy takes a miniature "PC guy" out of his pocket, sets him down. PC guy zooms up to full height - Mac guy says "Shh - he doesn't know he lives in my pocket" and then hands him a spreadsheet to open, looks at it over the PC guys shoulder, takes a copy for himself, miniaturizes PC guy again, and puts him back in his pocket?

Great fun.

The one thing I do not like about the commercials, is that they do not show the power of OS X, compared to windows. For example, why not show someone trying to search for a file on Windows, which I am still a little confused by myself in XP, compared to using Spotlight? That is just one example, and there is of course, many more.

I find it hard to judge Tech commercials, since I usually see right through any fluff, but Apple's commercials do make me laugh a little. I do still want Apple to "show off" OS X a little.

Many of the products and books I review are things I purchased for my own use. Some were given to me specifically for the purpose of reviewing them. I resell or can earn commissions from the sale of some of these items. Links within these pages may be affiliate links that pay me for referring you to them. That's mostly insignificant amounts of money; whenever it is not I have made my relationship plain. I also may own stock in companies mentioned here. If you have any question, please do feel free to contact me.

Specific links that take you to pages that allow you to purchase the item I reviewed are very likely to pay me a commission. Many of the books I review were given to me by the publishers specifically for the purpose of writing a review. These gifts and referral fees do not affect my opinions; I often give bad reviews anyway.
