Christmas came early this year.
This has to be the best book I've read in a long time. I've written articles on general troubleshooting, but this book takes the subject to a whole new level. It is Linux specific, though some of the knowledge is applicable to any system.
There's heavy concentration on using trace and debugging tools here; these sections are far better and more complete than anything I've read elsewhere, and include real examples of compilation problems and how to solve them. The debugging help available from /proc is also covered in detail, as is tracing kernel problems. There's just a wealth of information here: you'll spend hours and hours digging in and experimenting.
This is definitely my choice for best book of the year. Yes, I know we have a few months to go, but I can't see this getting beat out. Buy this today; you will not regret it.

Many of the products and books I review are things I purchased for my own use. Some were given to me specifically for the purpose of reviewing them. I resell or can earn commissions from the sale of some of these items. Links within these pages may be affiliate links that pay me for referring you to them. That's mostly insignificant amounts of money; whenever it is not I have made my relationship plain. I also may own stock in companies mentioned here. If you have any question, please do feel free to contact me.
Specific links that take you to pages that allow you to purchase the item I reviewed are very likely to pay me a commission. Many of the books I review were given to me by the publishers specifically for the purpose of writing a review. These gifts and referral fees do not affect my opinions; I often give bad reviews anyway.

Just in time for my next detective work. Our 3rd shift has someone who is really bogging down the CPU. The times are different each night, and are not related to anything in cron. Since backup is running at the time, things get even slower. Personally, I hate my phone going off at 2:30 am, and to hear "The system is slow".
I have been piecing together sar reports of memory, and disk usage, now I need to find out the program that is doing this, and then trace that back to the IP address.
Maybe this book will give me even more insight :-)
