When I first looked at LDAP ( LDAP Basics) I was moderately excited about the potential. When Microsoft started using it for their user information, it seemed like the world of integrated user databases was very, very close.
But it hasn't turned out that way quite yet. Microsoft of course does the usual things to make it difficult to interface with them, but I think a lot of the fault lies with LDAP : not the code, but with lousy documentation. This thread is a good example of that: confused people, things that don't quite work right, and so on. On the other hand, there are some good links to be had there, and some hope that this actually does work here and there and that the future may even be better.

Well, despite your articles and your help, 2 books and many hours I have never been able to make LDAP work for me. The entire thing is prolix. I see there is a new O'Reilly book on the subject:

We use LDAP at our company currently as a company wide email addressbook, which can be used in Mozilla Mail, or our company webmail, squirrelmail. I have not used it for authentication yet. I have found a very easy to use LDAP editor that is written in PHP, called LABE. You can find it here:

It makes adding/modifying or deleting entries painless.
